One of the most timeless types of content is “how-to” content.
Don’t believe me? Just do a quick search on any topic and narrow it down to the ones with titles that include “how-to”. You’re guaranteed to get a ton of them.
The simple fact is that such content is hugely popular and people can’t get enough of it. It’s easy to see why. Content, whether in video or article format, that shows you how to do something is useful. For one thing, it promises to help you learn something new online, which can be exciting, and for another, it’s usually easy to follow. Additionally, such content is empowering. It comes with the promise of helping you figure out something you didn’t know, simply by watching, reading, or listening to the right content.
Incorporating How-tos into Your Strategy
When coming up with a content strategy for my various clients, I never fail to include some how-to content. From my digital marketing case studies, I’ve learned that people keep searching for such content and as long as it’s relevant to them, they’ll keep consuming it.
This is invaluable knowledge for digital marketers because as long as you understand your clients’ customers, you can help them craft the right content that appeals to their audience and eventually boosts their business. The key is to not only get to know your audience but to also know how to find creative new opportunities.
Here’s how you can get started:
Get ideas from your audience.
If you want to know what your audience would like to watch or see, why not ask them directly? You can run a poll on your social media accounts, call up your customers, or even survey them via your email list or website. This way you’ll have first-hand info on the challenges they face so you can create how-to content that addresses those issues.
Another way to get ideas for how-to content is by checking what your audience is asking online about topics in line with your business. You can also take a look at similar content online to see how you can improve it. You can even read the comments people leave under such content to get ideas on what to cover.
Check in with your sales department.
Your salespeople are the ones in constant contact with your customers so they know what questions or issues they have. They are a great source of insight into your customers and they can help keep you updated on what kind of how-to content you should create.
Once you’ve identified some topics to run with, see how you can come up with unique content that addresses your customers’ needs.
